In many ways I think that it is an oxymoron to use 'wikipedia' and 'learning resource' in the same sentence. I am no saying that it isnt helpful all of the time but, a majority of the time it is unreliable. There is no real was to know that they information on the site is 10% accurate. On wikipedia anyone can log on and edit information. I believe that using wikipedia as a starting point to learning about things is okay, as long as you find other credible websites to support the information wikipedia is giving you.
I think that learning about wikispaces.com is extremly useful. There are so many different things that I can use a wiki for. I think that the most useful thing that I can use wiki's for would be to keep my students parents updated. I can use the wiki to upload pictures and and links to what the students are doing in the classroom. It is a great way to keep parents involved.
I liked you ideas about using the wikis to keep parents involved in the classroom that is something that I had not thought about but it really makes sense. I might have to steal your idea. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree about wikipedia, I don't trust their sources either. It's more of a fun website to look around on.
ReplyDeleteI said almost the same thing about using "Wikipedia" and "learning resource" in the same sentence in my blog, too. I agree that even though it is good to use for non-academic information, it isn't always reliable.
